A million here, a million there. Someday it will add to up real money.
But personally I don’t see Tim Cook’s reported donation of $1M to Trump’s inauguration as the story, or even the CEO’s of other US companies also donating the same amount. It’s not the donation value, the timing of the donation or any statement about their individual political views.
The real story is that they are all being pushed, into the same donation to avoid repercussions against the companies they lead. The companies cannot afford to take sides in a divided America. Neither can an individual CEO (unless your name is Elon or Jeff). But if everyone is throwing in money for crazy Uncle Donald’s party then you can’t afford not to donate and risk being ostracised or worse penalised.
They can afford the million dollar donation. But what they can’t afford is presidential retribution wrought upon their company by presidential temper tantrum. I don’t like it anymore than anyone else but we have live in the reality of the world, even when we don’t like it.
